Contemplation by Christine C.

He silently watched couples whirling around the ballroom, a blur of satin and lace. Once he had been an enthusiastic participant in such social events, confidently asking pretty girls from prominent families to list him on their dance cards.

Afterwards he would join friends to drink and gamble, or he would discreetly visit one of those pretty girls to partake in some more private dancing. But recently he had tired of hangovers and the stares of angry fathers. He wanted something more. Perhaps he should seriously consider that offer of a thousand dollars for an hour of his time.
